This course centers on the frequently, and wildly used term, “sustainability” to explore how individuals, groups, and larger communities are actively attempting to create more ecologically, socially, culturally, and economically sustainable systems in response to climate change and other environmental challenges. In particular, we will look at environmental and climate injustices, frontline and fenceline communities, how BIPOC and low income communities are disproportionately affected. At the same time, we will examine how local and global responses to the climate crisis attempt to cultivate resilience and foster justice, equity, and respect for diverse cultures in their everyday practices. We will look to a variety of media to critically examine expressions of sustainable practices across a wide spectrum including food and farming initiatives, conservation efforts, and regenerative economies. In addition, we will work on a hands-on community sustainability project.
