Principles of Sustainability

Taking care of people means taking care of nature and taking care of nature means taking care of people

– Kenny Ausebel

Action is the antidote to despair. – Joan Baez

No movement will succeed if it cannot paint a picture of a world people want to go to

– Dr. Martin Luther King, JR.

This course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to the principles of sustainability. A “sustainable” social, economic, and political system is one that can meet the needs of the current generation without undermining the ability of future generations to meet their needs. However, there are creative solutions that exist that go far beyond the status quo, this course begins with the foundational concepts of sustainability studies, then moves “beyond sustainability” to find regenerative solutions in environmental and social systems in a rapidly changing world.  The courses also involves a hands-on component.
